It’s a breezy October morning in Portland, and I am thriving.
I’ve started my junior year at Portland State in the theatre arts major, with a secondaryt education primary minor and English secondary minor (focusing on Shakespeare and Greek Mythology). I’m reading plays like never before- some for class, but mostly on my own. My primary topics of interest in research are theater history, dramaturgy, Shakespeare, lighting, and scenic design. Ready to start at Portland State University after finishing up my sophomore year (and seven shows) at Evergreen!
CURRENTLY:
Okay, they haven't really been "throes," but October has been charging full steam ahead. I've been memorizing increasingly longer monologues for class, while also memorizing some ~200 lines for SPSCC'S production of Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet). This show has been an incredibly fun process so far. I think I will definitely come back to SPSCC theater. They are doing La Cage Aux Folles in the spring, and, depending on what my schedule looks like and what is going on with Evergreen theater, I might audition.
In terms of Perennial Players, the student-run theater troupe that I co-manage at Evergreen, we have hit the ground running with our winter production of Othello, which is being directed by my friend, Ian Suchon. They have assembled a fantastic cast and are incredibly passionate about the project, so I trust in them to put on a high-quality show. I will be handling publicity matters for the production, as well as acting as the Musician for the show, playing transition music for scenes and whatnot. Audition Updates: I was not cast in Almost, Maine, which I almost thankful for. I will have much more time to focus on class and Goodnight Desdemona, as well as gearing up for Perennial's musical production. I elected to not attend the auditions for Olympia Family Theater's production of Winnie the Pooh, as it would cut into my winter break and would prevent me from going home to San Diego for the holidays. I've officially moved back to Olympia for the school year!
I had an amazing summer in San Diego. I worked two jobs- nannying and performing at Legoland, made a few day trips, attended my first ever music festival, and wrote a handful of new scripts. It's nice to be back in Olympia, though. I'm ready for the school year to start. I'm enrolled in a class called "Advanced Topics in the Performing Arts: The Audition and the Actor," taught by Dr. Walter Grodzik. I have high hopes, and I look forward to building a strong repertoire of audition pieces. I attended my first audition of the school year today! Haven't even been here for 48 hours. South Puget Sound Community College is producing "Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet). " I attended auditions and callbacks and have a really good feeling about it. Plus, it was the first audition in a long time where I didn't know anyone else! That proved to be a challenge- I wasn't sure of boundaries, and it took some time to get on the same level. But some actors and I instantly clicked in scenes and were able to follow each other's lead in to jokes, bits, emotions, and characters. I love the theater community. I was introduced to an elderly man named Tom who was also auditioning for SPSCC for the first time. We chatted for awhile, and he told me all about Olympia Little Theater, and their upcoming season. I'd love to work with him, so I think I will pursue their auditions! Upcoming auditions that I'm attending: Almost, Maine (Riot To Follow @ Evergreen State College), and Winnie The Pooh (Olympia Family Theater @ downtown Oly). I hope I can share good news with you soon! As I begin my first steps towards becoming a professional working artist, I think that it's time to upgrade from the small Google Site that I made in high school to something better! This site will likely be constantly under construction as I figure out how to make it as best as possible (I'm an artist, not a web designer!). Hopefully, though, it will serve its purpose. I aim to update this blog often with my current projects.
I just closed my latest production, Green Day's American Idiot, and am gearing up for my freshman year at the Evergreen State College to end. Back home, I will return as an improv performer at the Legoland California Resort, and hopefully take a foreign language course at the local community college. Next year, I will be a coordinator of one of Evergreen's theater clubs, and will be in charge of planning and producing productions of dance and theater. If you would like to contact me, I have some contact info posted in the contact section of my site! Thanks for stopping by! -Maggie |
